About The Position

Qualus is hiring a Relay Field Technician I in its Field Engineering department. The role applies electrical theory and critical-thinking skills to troubleshoot and execute testing plans for protection and control systems and schemes. The technician supports the assigned team in carrying out work plans safely and efficiently, with a focus on quality assurance. The position involves regular field work indoors and outdoors and learning and applying client switching procedures and safety measures under direct supervision.

Requirements

• Knowledge of three-phase power systems, power system protection and control schemes, test equipment, and test equipment software.
• Knowledge of test equipment and tool and wiring usage.
• Ability to interpret wiring and elementary diagrams and perform the basic test skills required for the role.
• Basic PC skills.
• Ability to learn and apply client switching procedures and safety measures under direct supervision.
• Ability to quickly learn and apply test procedures for various types of substation equipment.
• Ability to perform physical activity such as pushing, pulling, lifting, and bending in weather extremes.
• Ability to lift at least 30 pounds without assistance.
• Associate of Science in Electrical Technology (AET) or equivalent specialized training in system protection.
• Valid driver's license and good driving record.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Nice To Haves

• Field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, and testing and repairing substation relaying and control schemes.

Responsibilities

• Support acceptance testing and routine maintenance of transmission and distribution substation power equipment, relaying, pilot channel equipment, controls, and communications equipment.
• Test relaying systems, including electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relays; pilot channel equipment; CTs; CCVTs; line tuners; and line traps.
• Verify local and SCADA metering; calibrate relays; perform local and SCADA trip testing; and test digital fault recorders, sequence-of-event recorders, and end-to-end line relay systems.
• Apply test procedures for various types of relay test equipment and substation equipment.
• Support testing activities as required by the project lead.
• Learn and apply client switching procedures and safety measures under direct supervision.
• Reference and complete assignments according to applicable specifications.
• Perform regular field work indoors and outdoors.
