About The Position

Aurora is seeking a dynamic Regulatory Counsel to join its world-class legal team. This role will focus on navigating and shaping the legal and regulatory landscape of self-driving technology. The Regulatory Counsel will report to the Assistant General Counsel, Regulatory, and collaborate with Government Relations, Safety, and Business Development and Product Strategy teams. This position offers a unique opportunity to address novel legal questions and facilitate the commercialization and scaling of Aurora's self-driving technology.

Requirements

  • JD degree and active member of a State Bar.
  • 3-6 years of relevant in-house, law firm, and/or government experience.
  • Proven track record of handling complex regulatory and legislative matters, with an appetite for diving deep into multi-jurisdictional regulatory and policy issues.
  • Demonstrated excellence in analytical, written, and oral communication, with an ability to collaborate and influence cross-functionally.
  • Highly organized and capable of managing multiple simultaneous projects under deadline pressure, while providing practical, solutions-oriented advice to stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in the automotive, trucking, or other highly-regulated safety-sensitive industries.
  • Knowledge of the autonomous vehicle industry and relevant laws and safety standards.
  • Familiarity with adjacent legal and regulatory frameworks, including products liability, commercial law, data governance, privacy, or trade compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide cross-functional and actionable legal and policy advice to teams across the company throughout all stages of the Aurora Driver’s commercial deployment.
  • Advise internal teams regarding ongoing legislative and regulatory processes and trends, identify their impact on Aurora’s business and products, and design related compliance strategies.
  • Think creatively to address novel and complex legal issues raised by autonomous vehicle technology and to shape the regulatory frameworks needed to support rapid deployment and geographic expansion.
  • Own strategic compliance roadmaps with federal and state autonomous vehicle requirements, including securing operational authorizations, managing data and incident reporting, and developing external responses to regulatory inquiries.
  • Bolster the broader legal function by partnering with the wider legal team on occasional targeted projects, including incident response, dispute resolution, and transactional matters.
