About The Position

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) is seeking dedicated individuals to protect and preserve Maryland's air, water, and land resources, and safeguard the health of its citizens. The Regulatory and Compliance Engineer I position is an entry-level role within the Municipal Wastewater Permit Division of the Water and Science Administration. This position is responsible for protecting Maryland’s water quality standards and implementing Federal Clean Water Act requirements. It is a field position requiring site visits in surrounding Maryland counties. The role involves project management, including writing wastewater discharge permits, implementing Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), managing the permit issuance process, preparing fact sheets, public notices, and responses to comments, meeting with applicants, conducting public meetings, and preparing files for judicial review. The incumbent will be required to drive a State vehicle.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture from an accredited college or university
  • No prior experience required
  • A valid driver’s license with no more than five points is required to operate a State vehicle.
  • If you hold an out-of-state license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineering degree in Civil, Environmental, Water Resources, Biomedical, Chemical, Industrial, or Agricultural disciplines
  • Previous working knowledge using water-quality assessment model software such as WASP, QUAL2E, or CORMIX

Responsibilities
