About The Position

Under the guidance of the Registration & Collections team, the intern will develop skills in museum documentation, collections research, and digital recordkeeping while gaining exposure to the various functions of Registration. The internship provides students with hands-on experience supporting projects related to collections documentation, inventory and cataloguing, incoming and outgoing loans, and exhibitions. The Registration Department creates and maintains the official records for all objects in LACMA’s collection or on loan to the museum. The internship is based at LACMA’s main campus, with the possibility of partial remote work. Participants should also anticipate occasional travel to local storage facilities throughout Los Angeles County. This is a 15-week paid internship, approximately 16 hours per week at $18.47/hour.

Requirements

  • Internship applicants must be currently enrolled in an academic program or have recently graduated within 1 year.
  • Completed coursework in museum studies, art history, art, anthropology, archaeology, history, and library science.

Responsibilities

  • Gains exposure to exhibition-related tasks, including preparing installation and deinstallation documents, gallery inventory, and archiving past exhibition files.
  • Learns how acquisition records and supporting documentation are organized, maintained, and archived across physical and digital systems.
  • Learns introductory skills for data entry and record extraction using collections management software (TMS), Adobe, Google Suite, and Microsoft systems.
  • Learns professional museum practices by observing and working alongside staff and gaining insight into how exhibition and collections information is documented, maintained, and accessed.
