About The Position

Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in the environmental health field to inspect, analyze and enforce public health regulations and requirements. This position has department-specific responsibility. Educates, trains, and advises operators on code requirements and assists with implementation of operational changes to meet standards. Investigates food/waterborne disease outbreaks. Inspects and monitors special event stands and farmer's market stands. Inspects a variety of entities for compliance with various legal codes governing sanitary conditions. Inspects licensed public swimming pools, lodging facilities, septic systems, and children's camps for compliance with state and county ordinances. Addresses public complaints related to food safety and public health nuisances. Develops educational materials on various environmental public health topics for the public. Participates in Public Health Emergency Preparedness planning, training, and response. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public. Recommends enforcement measures to supervisor. Secures compliance with pertinent regulations by promotion, education, and enforcement. Inspects and designs individual sewage systems. Collects water, air, and food samples for laboratory analysis. Interprets analysis results based upon established sanitation principles. Reviews plans and specifications submitted for all eating and drinking establishments. Prepares and presents reports on investigations, inspections, and recommendations. Maintains records. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in natural sciences, environmental health or related field.
  • Two years work experience as a Registered Sanitarian.
  • Current certificate as a Registered Sanitarian by the State of Arizona.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and county codes, laws, and regulations pertaining to environmental health and sanitation.
  • Knowledge of biological and physical science applicable to environmental health.
  • Knowledge of field inspection methods and techniques.
  • Skill in collecting and analyzing samples.
  • Skill in preparing reports and presenting facts clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Skill in conducting investigations relating to environmental/public health compliance issues.
  • Skill in maintaining complete and accurate records.
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Ability to inspect, analyze, and make determination regarding environmental/public health conditions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to lift forty pounds, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, stand, and walk over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
  • Ability to perform other body movements consistent with the job responsibilities and work outdoors exposed to extreme climate.
