About The Position

Casey House is a specialty hospital providing holistic care for people living with and at risk of HIV. They offer inpatient, outpatient, and community-based services. They are seeking one Registered Practical Nurse to join their Inpatient team on a regular, part-time basis. This role is suitable for RPNs with experience in acute medicine, mental health, or emergency departments who are passionate about harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and health equity. The position involves 12-hour shifts (days and nights) with up to thirty hours scheduled weekly, and it is a fully on-site position.

Requirements

  • Actively registered in good standing as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Practical Nurse in good standing.
  • Minimum of 2 years recent experience in acute care, emergency, or medical-surgical nursing preferred.
  • Knowledge of HIV, substance use, mental health, and trauma-informed care.
  • Excellent physical assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Proficiency in electronic documentation; EPIC experience is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with community resources and commitment to person centered care.
  • Ability to provide health education tailored to client/family learning needs.
  • Experience working with marginalized populations and commitment to anti-oppressive practice.
  • Competency in a variety of clinical skills including (but not limited to), intramuscular injections, intravenous therapy, blood collection, wound care dressing, medication administration, etc.
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct record.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver direct client care to clients with complex medical conditions, including HIV, substance use, mental health challenges, and co-morbidities.
  • Perform assessments, administered medication, monitor vital signs, and provide wound care.
  • Collaborate with Registered Nurses, Physicians, and allied health professionals to develop, implement, and evaluate individual care plans.
  • Supports clients through medical interventions, crisis stabilization, and transitions in care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with professional standards.
  • Engage in reflective practice, performance evaluation, and continuous learning.
  • Mentor, teach, and coach students, peers, and other regulated and unregulated health professionals.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control practices, including isolation and wound care procedures.
  • Implement harm reduction strategies, including overdose prevention, substance use education, and distribution of harm reduction supplies.
  • Foster a therapeutic, inclusive environment that respects client autonomy, dignity, and cultural diversity.
  • Practice to full scope as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Communicate effectively with clients, families, and the health care team.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, prioritize care, and response to changing client care needs.
  • Participate in discharge and transitional care planning, advocating for the client needs.
  • Function independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Apply evidence-based interventions and evaluate client outcomes and experience.
  • Uphold professional, legal, and accreditation standards in all aspects of practice.
  • Anticipate and recognize rapidly changing situations; and a client’s transition from stable to unstable, establishes priorities, and takes appropriate action to collaborate and consult with the RN.
