About The Position

Scarborough Health Network (SHN) operates three hospitals and eight satellite sites, providing care to one of Canada’s most diverse communities. SHN is recognized for its large nephrology program, cardiac care, and spine center, and serves as a community-affiliated teaching site for the University of Toronto. The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) reports to the Patient Care Manager and is a professional caregiver responsible for delivering quality patient care within a total patient care delivery model, adhering to the standards of practice and competencies set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Regulated Health Professionals Act, and Scarborough Health Network. In the Women’s and Children Program, the RPN is part of a healthcare team that supports the birthing experience as a normal, healthy process, integrating the family. This specific role focuses on providing comprehensive care to Post-partum women and their newborns. The RPN is expected to engage in ethical conduct and deliver high-quality nursing care to patients and their families, aligning with SHN’s Nursing Practice philosophy.

Requirements

  • RPN diploma
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
  • Current experience or consolidation training (within last 3 years) in Postpartum
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and a breastfeeding course is required (or a commitment to complete within 3 months of employment)
  • Candidates must be interested and willing to be trained to work in alternate clinical areas within the Women’s and Children Program
  • Current BCLS certificate
  • Evidence of continuing education and professional development is required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to function both independently and as a multidisciplinary team member in a fast paced demanding environment
  • Demonstrates values consistent with Scarborough Health Network (SHN) Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation
  • Strong work ethic and commitment is required
  • Demonstrated high standards of work outputs
  • Highly punctual
  • Demonstrated professionalism and reliability

Nice To Haves

  • Scrub Nurse experience
  • Membership in RPNAO an asset
  • Fetal Health Surveillance experience
  • Certification in blood collection and IV’s
  • Ability to speak another language

Responsibilities

  • Responsible and accountable for providing quality patient care within a total patient care delivery model in accordance with the standards of practice and competencies of the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Regulated Health Professionals Act and Scarborough Health Network.
  • Provide comprehensive care to Post-partum women and their newborns.
  • Engage in ethical conduct and provide high quality nursing care to patients and their families, based on the philosophy and conceptual framework of Nursing Practice at Scarborough Health Network.
  • Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards.
  • Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community.
