About The Position

The Complex Care and Recovery Program is currently seeking a part-time, temporary Registered Practical Nurse to work in the Forensic General Unit C at the Queen Street Site. As a member of the interprofessional team, you will provide client-centered, recovery oriented, psychiatric and general nursing care, practice in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario standards of practice, CAMH policies and the CAMH Practice Model of Care, and ensure the security and safety of the client care environment. Working within a primary nursing model, you will be expected to perform assessments, develop, implement and evaluate interprofessional plans of client care for clients from diverse backgrounds who may be suffering from mental health and addiction problems and who are detained under the Criminal Code or under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Review Board (ORB). You will liaise with other services in the Complex Mental Illness Program and community agencies to coordinate care for clients. The Registered Practical Nurses will be responsible for contributing to program development, and providing education, support and supervision to students. You will participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of risk management plans and contribute to the assessment of client’s fitness for trial. You will ensure compliance with the ORB disposition or court orders. You will be expected to participate in the preparation of ORB and Court reports. You will support and contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements. This position involves shift rotation (days and nights) and weekend work and is located at the Queen Street Site.

Requirements

  • Registered in good standing as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current B.C.L.S. (CPR).
  • Medication administration certification.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills enabling you to develop the Nurse-Client relationship and work within a collaborative and diverse interprofessional team.
  • Ability to make behavioral observations, mental status assessments, monitoring client’s response to pharmaceutical care interventions, documentation and ongoing communication with other team members and charge nurses.
  • Sound knowledge of crisis intervention, addictions issues, psychosocial rehabilitation, the recovery model, forensic psychiatry, risk assessments, and severe and persistent mental illness.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the forensic legal and health care systems and how to develop and implement forensic risk assessment plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of disturbed behaviour.
  • Self-directed team player who is highly organized and has the communication and interpersonal skills that enable them to work within an interprofessional collaborative team environment.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse ethno cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Computer literacy.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge of psychiatric nursing, addiction issues and risk assessments.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language.
