About The Position

Under the leadership of the department director and/or supervisor, the Sleep Technologist performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing, including Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), and parasomnia studies. The Technologist collects data, monitors study-tracing qualities to ensure artifact-free signals, and makes necessary adjustments. They analyze and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs, determining final testing parameters and procedures in conjunction with the Medical Director or designee. Duties include data entry, procedure room setup, standard industry standards of 2 patients per night/setups, patient education, data collection, equipment calibration and troubleshooting, and the application of positive airway pressure titration therapies. The Technologist demonstrates knowledge of age-specific care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. They perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions, accurately transfer post-study data, document findings, and perform post-patient care and area clean-up. The Technologist scores sleep/wake stages and clinical events according to accepted guidelines and center-specific protocols. They also participate in accreditation activities. A Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) can perform the duties of a Registered Polysomnography Technician and may provide oversight of other staff.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography, or successful completion of polysomnography program of no less than one (1) year duration associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility, or equivalent experience and documented proficiency of all competencies required of a Polysomnographic Technician or successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree in respiratory care.
  • Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or equivalent with current registration with the Medical Board of California as a Polysomnographic Technologist or certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a registered respiratory therapist with licensure as a respiratory care practitioner by the Respiratory Care Board of California.
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.

  • Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
  • Accurately performs post-study data transfers and documentations.
  • Performs post-patient care and area clean-up.
  • Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Scores clinical events (respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc.) according to center-specific protocols.
  • Participates in accreditation activities including AASM ISR monthly.
  • Can perform duties defined for a Registered Polysomnography Technician.
  • May provide oversight of other staff.
