Under the leadership of the department director and/or supervisor, the Sleep Technologist performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing, including Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), and parasomnia studies. The Technologist collects data, monitors study-tracing qualities to ensure artifact-free signals, and makes necessary adjustments. They analyze and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs, considering physical/mental limitations, emotional/physiological status, and medical/social history to determine final testing parameters and interventions under the general oversight of the Medical Director. Duties include data entry, procedure room setup, standard industry standards of 2 patients per night/setups, patient education, data collection, equipment calibration and troubleshooting, and the application of positive airway pressure titration therapies. The Technologist demonstrates knowledge and skills for age-specific care in the assessment, treatment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. They perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions, accurately transfer post-study data, document findings, and perform post-patient care and area clean-up. The Technologist scores sleep/wake stages and clinical events according to professionally accepted guidelines and center-specific protocols. They also participate in accreditation activities, such as AASM ISR monthly. A Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) can perform the duties of a Registered Polysomnography Technician and may provide oversight of other staff.
