About The Position

We are seeking a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist to support the Veteran community in the Tacoma WA area. This position is open to all candidates, including Locum or Traveling professionals. The role involves direct patient care, including overnight nocturnal polysomnography (PSG) diagnostic, split-night, and titration studies, parasomnia montage studies, daytime sleep testing (MSLT and MWT), and Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT/HST). Responsibilities include event scoring, equipment setup and calibration, monitoring and adjusting PAP modalities, patient education, and maintaining patient safety and privacy. Administrative tasks include organizing and completing patient charts, documentation in CPRS/HER systems, and preparing supply requests. The technologist will ensure all recorded data, scoring results, and technical notes are uploaded and routed appropriately for supervising clinicians and will follow established workflows for notifying clinicians about abnormal findings. RPSGTs do not diagnose conditions, prescribe, dispense, or administer medications, but must adhere to facility policies regarding medication environments and provide post-study instructions.

Requirements

Authorization to work in the U.S. permanently, without sponsorship.
Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
2+ years of experience performing sleep laboratory services including in-lab PSG, titration studies, HSAT, and scoring.
An active Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification issued by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Maintain current BLS certification at all times.
Credentialing and onboarding requirements consistent with VA medical staff processes.

Previous experience with the VA is a plus.

Responsibilities

Perform Overnight Nocturnal Polysomnography (PSG) – diagnostic, split-night, and titration studies.
Conduct Parasomnia montage studies when ordered.
Perform Daytime sleep testing: Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT).
Manage Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT/HST) – device preparation, patient instruction, and post-study data download.
Score sleep studies for respiratory events, sleep states, arousals, limb movements, cardiac rhythm, and parasomnias.
Prepare studies for Technician interpretation, including proper labeling, summary sheets, and technical notes.
Set-up, interface, and calibrate PSG equipment (16-channel and 32-channel systems).
Operate computerized non-invasive monitoring system for airflow and respiratory effort, pulse oximetry, transcutaneous CO2, Plethysmography, ECG, muscle tone, and digital video monitoring.
Perform daily quality control of all sleep-lab equipment and identify/report suspected malfunctions.
Apply, monitor, and adjust PAP modalities: CPAP, BiLevel, BiLevel ASV, and BiLevel ST/VAPS.
Recognize respiratory events requiring PAP pressure adjustment according to AASM titration guidelines.
Document PAP tolerance, mask fit, leak, and response.
Explain procedures and ensure patient comfort to optimize data quality.
Monitor and record significant observations, including sleep stages, heart rate and respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, body position, presence/absence of apnea, hypopnea, snoring, nocturnal seizures, bruxism, cardiac arrhythmias, and parasomnias.
Recognize artifacts and correct them to maintain valid signals.
Identify urgent clinical concerns and respond appropriately: notify supervisor for noncritical issues, activate VA Code Blue procedures when needed, and initiate CPR when required.
Maintain patient safety and privacy in accordance with VA/HIPAA requirements.
Organize, prepare, and complete patient charts, tracings, and technical notes for physical review.
Provide accurate, timely documentation in CPRS/HER systems.
Upload and transfer electronic files and diagnostic data in accordance with VA standards.
Ensure compliance with VHA Directive 1088 regarding communication pathways for diagnostic results.
Prepare PAP supply requests (filters, tubing, masks) when required.
Perform other duties that directly support Sleep Lab operations, as assigned by Sleep Medicine leadership.
Participate in Sleep Lab quality-control measures and maintenance of accreditation standards.
Report on time for all scheduled shifts.
Ensure all recorded data, scoring results, and technical notes are uploaded and routed appropriately.
Follow all established sleep lab reporting workflows for notifying supervising clinicians about abnormal findings requiring urgent review.
Adhere to all established facility policies regarding medication environments.
Provide appropriate post-study instructions such as guidance on PAP equipment return and cleaning, post-study safety reminders, and instructions for follow-up appointments or PAP initiation.
