About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy or a supervisor designee, the Pharmacy Technician provides support to all aspects of patient care and medication management as it relates to pharmacy services at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital (BRH). This role involves maintaining departmental policies and procedures, managing inventory, preparing medications, and ensuring compliance with safety and confidentiality regulations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • Current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certificate.
  • New York State registration.
  • Knowledge of personal computers required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality management program and infection control standards.
  • Restocking and managing inventory within the Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs).
  • Preparing IV’s and oral products under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Re-stocking Medication in proper locations throughout BRH.
  • Prepackaging bulk medications to include labeling, under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Preparing and delivering (when appropriate) floor stock medications as requested.
  • Packaging unit dose, oral solid and liquids and entering labels with the unit-dose re-packaging program.
  • Daily collection of discontinued medications from the floors and return to stock in Pharmacy and/or removing expired /discontinued returned medication.
  • Exchanges medication carts on Cart-change days and is responsible for sanitizing the cassettes monthly, or more frequently, if needed.
  • Deliver medications in medication rooms, ADCs, and refrigerators.
  • Remove and return to Pharmacy all medication in the Pharmacy Returns Bin and Refrigerator located in Medication Rooms and throughout patient care areas.
  • Remove expired, or about to expire, medications throughout BRH.
  • Load, unload, pend, and other responsibilities related to ADC medication management.
  • Perform missing medication and other responsibilities related to EMR medication management.
  • Procure, purchase, and return medications as needed, when assigned, per pharmacy procedures.
  • Performs all duties and actions assigned by the Pharmacist or Director of Pharmacy.
  • Demonstrates behaviors with organization’s mission and goals.
  • Possesses knowledge of information related to material safety data sheets relevant to job function.
  • Participates in educational programs and inservice meetings.
  • Possesses knowledge of incident reporting procedures and works to create a model of patient safety through documenting events, when appropriate.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Possesses knowledge of the department’s quality improvement initiatives.
  • Practices Standard Precautions.
  • Follows regulations, policies and guidelines on the prevention of infections; does not eat or drink in patient care areas.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information; abides by HIPAA regulations.
  • Maintains a professional image and follows Hospital’s policy on uniforms; consistently wears hospital ID.
  • Demonstrates reliable, on-time attendance, which is an essential function of all jobs at Burke.
  • Completes mandatory annual learning within deadline.
