About The Position

This is a Registered Nurse position in the Surgery department that offers a unique 5 days on, 5 days off schedule, working 50 hours per pay period with benefits included. This role emphasizes work-life balance with no night call and no weekends. Holidays that fall on your scheduled work week are expected and rotated. The position is a salaried contracted role. During orientation, the schedule is Monday-Friday from 06:45-15:15, with a typical orientation period of 16 weeks for those without surgical experience. Once oriented and the contract is signed, the schedule shifts to Monday-Friday from 06:45-17:15 for one week, followed by a week off. The role involves administering, directing, and coordinating inter- and intra-departmental activities in accordance with Kentucky regulations, hospital standards, and nursing department objectives. Essential duties include maintaining competencies, participating in committees, cultivating a positive work environment, mentoring team members, demonstrating commitment to high standards, prioritizing tasks, adhering to dress code, using resources responsibly, attending meetings, maintaining a safe work environment, communicating effectively, and seeking professional growth. The role also focuses on positive customer relations, managing difficult situations, responding promptly to needs, soliciting feedback, meeting commitments, and demonstrating critical thinking skills using evidence-based practice.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing required
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Kentucky Board of Nursing or compact state
  • BLS required
  • ACLS required
  • 1 year RN in acute care setting or experience as circulating RN preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • ACLS preferred within 3 months, not to exceed 6 months
  • Certification in area of expertise preferred

  • Obtains necessary equipment and positioning supplies needed for cases and ensures all scheduled cases have complete case carts. Ensures age specific supplies and equipment are available
  • Assess patient and room readiness prior to transport to the operating room
  • Reports pertinent patient observations and incomplete preoperative preparation to the physician, Clinical Specialty Coordinator, and / or Control Desk Charge Nurse
  • Coordinates/assists the transfer of patient to / from the operating table
  • Maintains a quiet room environment and provides for the patient’s privacy and dignity. Assists the anesthetist as necessary
  • Performs skin preparation in accordance with policy and procedure, assists with draping as needed
  • Verifies physician orders, history and physical, update and site marking (if applicable)
  • Performs sponge, instrument, and sharps counts in accordance with policy and procedure
  • Documents care given, specimens, medications, implants and supplies for patients accurately
  • Observes for and corrects breaks in aseptic technique and demonstrates aseptic technique while tying, snapping surgical gowns and movement in OR suite
  • Functions as a scrub nurse after appropriate training and demonstrated competency
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of surgery suites, sterile rooms and ancillary rooms, as well as, assisting with room turnover. Demonstrates understanding and indications of cleaning solutions and required contact time
  • Checks, cleans and restocks surgical suites, sterile rooms and ancillary rooms. Returns equipment and supplies to appropriate location
  • Maintains communication with assigned rooms, clinical coordinators, and control desk charge nurse
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate autoclave and rapid readout. Document both in appropriate logs
  • Handles laboratory specimens correctly
  • Terminally disinfects ultrasound probe
  • Answers intercom pages promptly and courteously responds to needs
  • Makes appropriate decisions utilizing evidence-based practice and demonstrates critical thinking skills
