About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Family Birth Center coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across care settings and throughout the continuum of care, meeting the needs of patients and families. Within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, the RN plans, implements, evaluates, and communicates all phases of nursing care for assigned patients, with the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice providing a basis for practice. The RN provides leadership through preceptor responsibilities, informal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. The role includes delegating patient care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource adequacy. Strong communication, mentoring, and teaching skills are important; participation in committees or projects may also be part of the role. Newly graduated RNs with less than 12 months of practice experience who are hired into a scheduled FTE RN position are automatically enrolled in the Nurse Residency Program. All nurses new to Mayo Clinic receive an extensive orientation program, regardless of experience. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, which requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
