About The Position

This is a per diem position for a Registered Nurse in the Operating Room. The role involves providing competent, age, and specialty-appropriate nursing care to assigned patients, ensuring their safety and comfort according to legal, ethical, institutional, and professional standards. The nurse will assess patients, identify nursing diagnoses, plan and prioritize care, educate patients and families, communicate with healthcare professionals, and ensure interventions align with the overall plan of care and discharge plan. Adherence to standards of care, physician's orders, and UTMB's policies and procedures is expected. The role also includes patient/family education, performing technical procedures, maintaining aseptic technique, documenting care, respecting patient rights and confidentiality, and practicing positive guest relations. The nurse will also contribute to quality improvement activities, practice cost containment, organize work efficiently, function as a team member, and maintain current knowledge and skills.

Requirements

  • RN with current license or valid permit to practice professional nursing in Texas.
  • Two (2) years full time clinical RN experience with at least two (2) years in specialty area assigned (or similar experience).
  • Current BCLS certification obtained through American Heart Association (AHA).

Responsibilities

  • Competently and accurately assess patients and identify nursing diagnosis/patient care needs.
  • Competently plan and prioritize age and specialty appropriate care of each patient assigned, including patient/family education.
  • Communicate relevant information to appropriate health care professionals.
  • Ensure planned interventions are consistent with the overall plan(s) of care and adhere to the identified discharge plan.
  • Safely and properly deliver age & specialty appropriate nursing care to assigned patients.
  • Execute physicians’ orders; administer medications and treatments in accordance with UTMB’s policies, procedures and standards.
  • Encourage patient/family participation in care and provide emotional support and comfort measures.
  • Competently perform routine technical procedures/skills in specialty area assigned.
  • Provide patient/family instruction and healthcare teaching.
  • Practice and promote proper aseptic technique, infection control measures, and body mechanics.
  • Evaluate the patient/family response to, and outcome(s) of, implemented care and modify the plan of care accordingly.
  • Competently and consistently complete accurate, concise, and legible documentation on all patient, unit, and hospital records.
  • Respect and support patient rights and practice principles of patient and employee confidentiality.
  • Recognize ethical dilemmas, utilize available resources and seek assistance in dealing with them.
  • Practice positive guest and patient relations, communicating in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Report and seek assistance in dealing with guest complaints/concerns.
  • Establish and maintain a positive rapport with patient/family.
  • Utilize research-based nursing interventions and support unit-based quality improvement activities.
  • Practice cost containment for patients and the unit.
  • Competently prioritize and organize work to complete required assignments within a specified time frame.
  • Effectively and efficiently use time, equipment, and supplies.
  • Function as an interdependent and supportive team member.
  • Assist in maintaining a positive learning environment.
  • Exchange constructive feedback with peers.
  • Assume responsibility for remaining current on job-related knowledge and skills and ongoing education/in-service/credentialing/certification/licensure requirements.
