The Registered Nurse will provide care to patients in the emergency department who are waiting for an inpatient bed, primarily patients requiring medical-surgical or telemetry placement. This is a telemetry-focused role requiring strong cardiac telemetry skills. Nurses must read and interpret cardiac strips and manage cardiac drips according to physician orders and parameters. Nurses may also be asked to assist with emergency department patients by taking vital signs, starting IVs, and administering medication, but will not be assigned as the primary RN for an ED patient assignment. The position involves 12-hour shifts, either 7 a.m.–7 p.m. or 7 p.m.–7 a.m., with self-scheduling that may change. Nurses work four weekend shifts in each four-week schedule and rotate holidays with permanent staff. There is no call requirement. Nurses may float to medical-surgical, telemetry, and overflow units, as well as to the CRMC and MGMC emergency departments. The dress code is navy scrubs. Orientation includes two shifts on a medical-surgical/telemetry unit at the primary campus, followed by a pass/fail simulation lab on the first day of orientation.
