About The Position

The Registered Nurse works in the Neuroscience ICU, a 28-bed unit providing neurocritical care for diseases involving the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The unit is part of VCU’s comprehensive stroke center and has received the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Beacon Award for critical care excellence. New graduates and experienced candidates are welcome to apply. The position may be at the Clinical Nurse I, II, or III level. Nurses provide direct, age-specific care in accordance with medical orders and an integrated multidisciplinary plan, accurately document care, administer prescribed medications safely, and identify incompatibilities or interactions. They support illness and injury prevention, wellness, and patient comfort; educate and direct others; and contribute to leadership at the unit level. Clinical Nurse II nurses recognize changes in patient situations, intervene appropriately, and mobilize resources for patient and family needs. Clinical Nurse III nurses anticipate changes, intervene appropriately, and serve as clinical role models. Nurses follow provider orders, Virginia nursing regulations, the ANA Code of Ethics, national nursing practice standards, and VCU Health System policies and procedures. They organize work and may delegate and supervise other staff. Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays; rotation and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager and may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.
