The Registered Nurse will work on 17 James, a medical oncology unit caring for adult and geriatric patients with solid tumor cancers throughout their cancer journey, from new diagnosis and treatment through transition to end-of-life care. The unit also cares for patients with medical-surgical issues, with a strong focus on infection prevention protocols and preventing patient falls. Common diagnoses include breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, and esophageal cancers, as well as encounters for antineoplastic chemotherapy. The role involves night shifts, telemetry monitoring and interpretation, and floating to other medical-surgical oncology units as required. The staffing goal is a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio, though ratios may be 1:5. Weekend work varies according to unit needs. Permanent staff do not have set or blocked scheduling. Oncology experience is preferred but not required.
