The Registered Nurse works in the Observation Unit, caring for medical-surgical, telemetry, and oncology patients. The unit manages patients expected to stay up to two midnights, with the goal of delivering high-quality, efficient care while avoiding premature discharge or admission. Patients are boarded from the Emergency Department and ICC in observation status and are stable and unlikely to require an escalation in care. Unit providers include APPs and supervising physicians. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4, with the charge nurse included in an assignment. Other available resources include RNs, PCAs, and UCAs. The role may occasionally float to the James Emergency Department to assist with inpatient medical-surgical telemetry patients awaiting transfer to their acute care unit. Orientation to that area will be provided. Scrubs are not provided; the required colors are navy blue or white. Scheduling is 12-hour day or night shifts, based on the traveler’s preference.
