The Registered Nurse in Acute Med/Surg practices independently in the same or a similar clinical setting and demonstrates awareness of relevant aspects of a situation. The nurse provides routine and complex care, works toward long-range goals and plans, continues developing the ability to manage clinical contingencies, and makes appropriate assignments and delegations to other care providers. Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the nurse provides care through assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The role addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families according to the nurse’s level of practice. The nurse administers medications and treatments using appropriate protocols, monitors for side effects and effectiveness, documents patient histories, symptoms, medications, and care, and assesses learning needs to provide education and identify relevant issues and resources. Newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days. New hires are precepted by a designated trained staff member, and onboarding requirements are validated through organizational entry and MedSurg-specific competency validations. Newly licensed RNs may participate in a residency program or other specific orientation. Skills and competencies are completed with a preceptor at the bedside and documented in program tracking software. Annual competency verification requirements must also be completed.
