About The Position

This position involves providing comprehensive patient care as a Registered Nurse (RN) in New York State. The role encompasses clinical care, patient education, care coordination, administrative duties, professional development, and effective communication. Specific duties may vary based on the work setting (hospital, clinic, long-term care, home health) and specialty area (medical-surgical, critical care, pediatrics, etc.).

Requirements

  • Complete a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department as qualifying for RN licensures, OR Complete a nursing education program that is determined by the State Education Department to be equivalent to New York State registered programs.
  • Pass the National Council Licensures Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
  • Submit an application for licensures and the required fee ($143).
  • Submit official transcripts verifying your nursing education.
  • Register for and pass the NCLEX-RN examination.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Complete infection control and child abuse reporting coursework.
  • Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check.
  • For International Applicants: Provide verification of education through a credentials evaluation service.
  • For International Applicants: Demonstrate English proficiency through an approved examination if education was in a language other than English.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, and health histories.
  • Develop and implement individualized patient care plans.
  • Administer medications safely according to physician orders and protocols.
  • Perform treatments and procedures (wound care, IV starts, catheterizations, etc.).
  • Monitor patients' conditions and report changes to the healthcare team.
  • Respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively.
  • Document all care provided in the electronic health record system.
  • Educate patients and families about health conditions.
  • Provide discharge instructions and medication education.
  • Teach self-care techniques and health maintenance strategies.
  • Explain procedures and treatments before performing them.
  • Offer guidance on lifestyle modifications for chronic disease management.
  • Collaborate with physicians, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Coordinate patient care between departments and during shift changes.
  • Facilitate patient transfers between units or to other facilities.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and care conferences.
  • Arrange for necessary post-discharge services and follow-up care.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records.
  • Manage inventory of supplies for assigned patients.
  • Prioritize care for multiple patients based on acuity.
  • Supervise nursing assistants and delegate appropriate tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and facility policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Stay current with evidence-based nursing practices.
  • Complete required continuing education for licensures.
  • Participate in training on new equipment and procedures.
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Potentially serve on hospital committees or task forces.
  • Effectively communicate with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Serve as a patient advocate.
  • Report critical information through proper channels.
  • Utilize therapeutic communication techniques with distressed patients.
  • Manage difficult conversations with sensitivity and professionalism.
