About The Position

Akicita Federal is hiring Medical-Surgical Registered Nurses to deliver direct inpatient care to adult patients served by the Indian Health Service in Chinle, Arizona. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in an underserved community while working within a dedicated Adult Care Unit team in the heart of the Navajo Nation.

Requirements

  • Current, active, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license valid for practice (compact or Arizona licensure accepted).
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification — must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification — must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Any unit-specific certifications required by the Adult Care Unit at time of placement.
  • Demonstrated experience in a medical-surgical or adult inpatient care setting sufficient to practice independently without direct supervision.
  • Copy of nursing degree and official transcript available for submission upon request.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience providing nursing care in a federal, tribal, or Indian Health Service healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with the health priorities and cultural context of Native American and/or rural patient populations.
  • Additional unit-specific certifications beyond BLS and ACLS relevant to adult medical-surgical care.
  • Experience working in critical-access or resource-limited hospital environments where clinical adaptability is essential.
  • Demonstrated track record of long-term placement stability, reducing gaps in care continuity for the patient population served.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing assessment, planning, and direct bedside care to adult inpatient populations in a fast-paced medical-surgical unit.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions in accordance with established clinical protocols and provider orders.
  • Monitor and document patient status, vital signs, and clinical progress, escalating concerns to the care team promptly and accurately.
  • Coordinate care transitions, discharge planning, and patient education to support safe, continuous care throughout the patient's stay.
  • Respond to cardiac and medical emergencies using ACLS and BLS protocols, functioning as a reliable member of the rapid-response team.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members—including physicians, specialists, and support staff—to develop and execute individualized patient care plans.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in compliance with facility and regulatory standards.
