The Registered Nurse in the ICU Neurology setting provides routine and complex nursing care and practices independently while demonstrating awareness of relevant aspects of the clinical situation. The nurse manages care with both immediate needs and long-range goals in mind, develops the ability to cope with clinical contingencies, and makes appropriate assignments and delegates tasks to other care providers. Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the nurse uses the nursing process—assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation—to care for assigned patients. The role addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families according to the nurse’s level of practice. The nurse administers medications and treatments using appropriate protocols, monitors for side effects and effectiveness, documents patient histories, symptoms, medications, and care, and assesses learning needs to provide education and identify relevant issues and resources. Newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days. New hires are precepted by a designated trained staff member and must successfully complete organizational entry competency validation and Critical Care Department-specific competency validation. Annual competency verification requirements must also be completed. The work schedule is 7 PM to 7 AM.
