The Registered Nurse applies the nursing process to plan and implement patient care, provide patient and family education, coordinate continuity of care, communicate pertinent information to the healthcare team, collaborate on patient goals, and evaluate progress toward effective outcomes. The nurse is also expected to pursue professional growth through learning activities consistent with Board of Nursing standards. This role combines Radiology Resource nursing and Nuclear Medicine. The Resource RN floats among MRI, the Recovery and Observation Care Unit for Interventional Radiology patients (ROCU), PET/Fluoro, CT, and the IV Cubby, providing support to radiology areas. Duties include responding first to stat or rapid calls, accessing ports, and monitoring pacemakers. Nuclear Medicine responsibilities include cardiac stress perfusion studies, PET stress testing, viability studies, brain mapping and stress studies, sarcoid studies, post-procedure monitoring of mapping patients in Interventional Radiology, and support for coronary CT angiography. The nurse also helps prepare thyroid cancer patients for iodine therapies and testing, and teaches nuclear medicine students patient-care topics including direct care, vital signs, and EKG rhythm interpretation. The schedule is three 12-hour shifts per week, totaling 36 hours, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The role requires 3–4 weekend shifts and 3–4 on-call shifts per six-week scheduling period; being called in is described as less common.
