The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across settings and throughout the continuum of care, using the Mayo Nursing Care Model to plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate all phases of care for assigned patients. Practice is based on the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. Pre-Op/PACU nurses care for patients before and immediately after surgical procedures; they do not perform surgery. Responsibilities include assessing and resolving pre-operative issues, starting and monitoring IVs, administering pre-operative medications, and explaining instructions, rights, and procedures. In the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, nurses care for patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia. The unit is fast-paced and uses critical care nursing concepts. Staffing ratios are 1 RN to 3 patients in Pre-Op, 1 RN to 2 patients in Phase 1 PACU, and 1 RN to 3 patients in Phase 2 PACU. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal or informal leadership, and quality-improvement efforts; delegates care according to staff skill and experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources; and may participate in committees or projects. Applicants new to Mayo Clinic or the Pre-Op/PACU team must be available to orient Monday through Friday during the first week, followed by 3–4 days per week for the next 4–5 weeks. Employees must live within a reasonable driving distance of campus to meet a 45-minute on-call requirement. The role is eligible for TN sponsorship, which requires state licensure and VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
