Registered Nurse - Pre-Op/PACU - RN

Mayo Clinic•Jacksonville, FL

About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across settings and throughout the continuum of care, using the Mayo Nursing Care Model to plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate all phases of care for assigned patients. Practice is based on the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources. The position may also involve committee or project participation, mentoring, and teaching. Pre-Op/PACU nurses care for patients before and immediately after surgery; they do not perform surgery. Care includes Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU. Nurses assess and address pre-operative issues, start and monitor IVs, administer pre-operative medications, and explain pre-operative instructions, patient rights, and procedures. In PACU, nurses care for patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia. The department is a fast-paced unit that uses critical care nursing concepts, with stated nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:3 in Pre-Op, 1:2 in Phase 1 PACU, and 1:3 in Phase 2 PACU. Applicants new to Mayo Clinic or the Pre-Op/PACU team must be available to orient Monday through Friday during the first week and 3–4 days per week for the following 4–5 weeks. Applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance of campus to meet the 45-minute on-call requirement. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship; successful sponsorship requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
