The Registered Nurse in the Med Surg Unit is accountable for the safe, individualized, efficient, and effective management and delivery of nursing care for hospitalized inpatients and hospital-based outpatients. This role involves demonstrating critical thinking, identifying and responding to changes in clinical condition, and including patients and their families in the plan of care. The nurse will also participate in learning experiences, engage in organizational initiatives, and ensure safe medication administration. Additionally, the RN participates in quality improvement practices, interacts professionally with providers, ensures readiness for emergencies, and participates in the development of the trauma program. They may also participate in a committee or project improvement team and be familiar with EHR systems. A Unit Charge Nurse, a specific role within this position, is designated to have responsibility for care and coordination on a particular unit during a shift, meeting all essential functions of a staff nurse and potentially having patient assignments. The Charge Nurse role includes leading daily line-ups, supporting service excellence, considering safety and cost in care delivery, utilizing staffing matrices, planning breaks, managing shift reports, investigating incidents, and reporting high-risk situations.
