About The Position

The Registered Nurse provides nursing care at the Wilson County Detention Center in Wilson, North Carolina, supporting medical and behavioral health care in a correctional setting. The role involves assessing, planning, and delivering patient care; administering ordered medications and treatments; responding to emergencies; documenting care; coordinating services; and maintaining infection control and patient confidentiality. The nurse may cover shifts at multiple correctional facilities, serve as backup to the H.S.A./Site Manager, and help train new hires and coworkers. Additional duties may be assigned.

Requirements

Active nursing license in good standing in the state where services are provided.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with hands-on training.
Excellent documentation skills.
Knowledge of the RN scope of practice.

Responsibilities

Timely and accurately assess, plan, and deliver nursing care to patients.
Contact practitioners to obtain orders.
Administer prescribed medications and treatments and perform other tasks as ordered by the practitioner.
Provide emergency first aid care when appropriate.
Check and record vital signs, peak flows, blood glucose checks, weight, and other on-site diagnostic tests when appropriate.
Triage officer intake screenings to determine necessity and priority at sick call.
Collect and record data for statistical reporting on the CQI.
Record information in chronic clinic and outcome study documents as indicated.
Report reactions to treatments and medications and changes in patients’ emotional or physical conditions.
Educate patients on topics such as correctional facility policies and discharge planning.
Record care information concisely, accurately, completely, and promptly using the appropriate formats and forms.
Collaborate and coordinate multiple medical services for diagnosis and treatment as directed by the practitioner.
Maintain aseptic techniques and required infection-control precautions.
Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reactions and overdose.
Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition.
Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of social and behavioral sciences, particularly as applied to correctional settings.
Recommend improved procedures, equipment, and supplies to the supervisor.
Notify the supervisor of medical or security incidents.
Present or participate in in-service education sessions.
Perform duties within the scope of practice mandated by state and local standards.
Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA practices as required by government agencies.
Oversee and delegate duties as expected and allowed under the RN scope of practice.
Cover shifts at multiple correctional facilities if directed.
Act as a backup to the H.S.A./Site Manager if asked.
Train new hires and coworkers if asked.
Perform other duties as assigned.
