The Registered Nurse provides quality nursing care and is accountable for coordinating patient care. The role uses the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—to provide age- and developmentally appropriate, patient- and family-centered care in collaboration with multidisciplinary team members. Care addresses patients’ physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs, including nursing diagnoses, outcomes, interventions, care coordination, health teaching and promotion, and evaluation consistent with MUSC policies. The nurse helps maintain a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through protection of patient privacy and respectful, responsive, accepting, and professional conduct. The position also involves participation in a professional practice model, shared governance, peer review, professional development, and efforts to promote leadership, clinical excellence, effective teamwork, autonomous practice, accountability, and critical thinking. The nurse applies care-management principles to coordinate efficient and effective patient-care services, identify clinical priorities, and take action to improve patient outcomes. MUSC identifies RN I and RN II qualification levels. RN I requires an associate’s degree. RN II requires an associate’s degree and at least one year of work experience as a registered nurse. Both levels require licensure as a registered nurse in South Carolina or a compact state and current qualifying BLS certification.
