About The Position

This is a per diem, onsite position for a Registered Nurse. The role involves providing care in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative settings. Responsibilities include creating a safe and therapeutic environment, communicating with team members and concerned parties, preparing and managing surgical supplies and equipment, documenting patient information, ensuring patient safety and comfort, and assisting the surgical team throughout procedures. The nurse will also be responsible for specimen handling and room preparation for subsequent cases.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in peri-operative nursing.
  • Thorough working knowledge of surgical and aseptic technique.
  • Working knowledge of the physiological and anatomical aspects of the surgical intervention scheduled.
  • Licensed in the State as an R.N.
  • Current C.P.R. certification.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS preferred.
  • Circulating experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Create a safe, therapeutic environment where patient's psychological, physiological, and physical needs are identified, anticipated, and met.
  • Provide a channel of communication between events and team members in the operating room and persons who may not be in the immediate area but are concerned with the patient's operative status.
  • Make provisions for instrument, supply, and equipment requirements of surgical procedures, as assigned.
  • Document accurate, timely data appropriately.
  • Inspect the O.R. and Procedure Room to be certain it is clean, complete, and safe, ensuring all equipment is checked for safety, functioning capability, and complete assembly.
  • Direct and assist Scrub Assistant in preparing for the surgical procedure according to established procedure and the Surgeon's preference card.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide supplies and equipment as requested.
  • Coordinate all activities within the O.R. and Procedure Room to provide for a non-eventful, safe, effective, and timely surgical intervention.
  • Maintain a running tally of sponge count materials and needles, documenting and informing the surgeon of discrepancies.
  • Handle specimens, including accurate and complete identification on labels and tickets, placement in appropriate containers/solutions, and dispatch to the laboratory per established procedures.
  • Provide assistance as needed for delivery of patient care, remain at the patient's side and assist the Anesthesiologist as required with suctioning, extubation, etc., and transfer to post-op gurney (or wheelchair if patient receives only local anesthesia).
  • Ensure that appropriate specimens are identified and delivered to the appropriate area, making certain that all specimens have been placed for dispatch and entered in the Specimen Log.
  • Direct and assist with between-case clean-up to provide a smooth flow of to-follow cases.
  • Inspect the room and proceed to preparation for the next case, as assigned.
  • Assure that sufficient sterile packs are prepared for the following day's surgery.
