The Registered Nurse provides care through face-to-face visits and telehealth nursing. Patient visits may include reviewing health issues, reviewing medications, administering immunizations, and providing patient education. Telehealth work includes telephone care related to visit planning, such as pre-ordering labs and consultations under physician direction, and assessing symptom-based concerns. The RN collaborates daily with physicians, clinical assistants, appointment coordinators, and medical secretaries. The RN coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The role supports professional nursing practice across care settings and the continuum of care. Within Mayo Clinic's Nursing Professional Practice Model and the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, the RN plans, implements, evaluates, and communicates all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership, and quality-improvement activities; delegates care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources; and may participate in committees or projects. Some employees may be required to drive a personal vehicle as part of their role.
