The Clinical Nurse role integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. The nurse supports the health care team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. The position provides direction and education and develops or assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level, depending on the clinical level. The nurse delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care for an individual patient or group of patients according to medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The nurse safely administers prescribed medications and identifies incompatibilities or interactions. Clinical Nurse I follows established nursing practice and begins acquiring leadership skills; Clinical Nurse II demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, recognizes changes in patient situations, mobilizes resources, and assumes unit-level leadership responsibilities; Clinical Nurse III demonstrates unit-level clinical knowledge, anticipates changes in patient situations, intervenes appropriately, and serves as a clinical role model. The position serves age-specific groups as appropriate to the unit assignment. Clinicians work across all three shifts, including weekends and holidays. Individual rotations and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager and may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.
