About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation) along with the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas. The Cardiovascular Surgical ICU Unit is a 20-bed unit where nurses handle 1-2 patients based on acuity. Nurses provide service to patients who have undergone open heart surgeries, various lung surgeries, and manage critically ill patients requiring intensive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, multiple drug infusions, IABP therapy, and CRRT. All nurses new to critical care will participate in a comprehensive 12-week Transition to Practice program, which includes classroom teaching, simulations, case studies, problem-based learning, and preceptor-based unit orientation covering essential critical care topics.

Requirements

Associate’s Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
Virginia RN License or Virginia or Compact/Multi-State Eligible.
1 year of RN Experience required
1 year of Intermediate - Stepdown level of care with cardiac knowledge ideal, ED, PCU or 1+ years of Medical/Surgical experience.
All Direct Care RN's required to have BLS within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

Perform a competent level of nursing care using the nursing process.
Apply standards of practice including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Adhere to standards of professional performance including ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality, resource utilization, and environmental health.
Provide nursing care to patients who have undergone open heart surgeries (e.g., CABG, Valve repair/replacement, aneurysm repair, TAVR, ablations), Heart Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support devices (e.g., Total Artificial Heart, ECMO), and various lung surgeries.
Manage critically ill patients requiring intensive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, multiple drug infusions, IABP therapy, and CRRT.
Participate in the 12-week Transition to Practice program for nurses new to critical care, which includes classroom teaching, simulations, case studies, problem-based learning, and preceptor-based unit orientation.
