About The Position

Sentara Heart Hospital, located on the campus of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, is hiring a Registered Nurse for the CVICU. The Sentara Heart Hospital is a 112-bed facility recognized for its cardiology services and heart surgery, ranking highly both in Virginia and nationally. The Registered Nursing (RN) role involves performing a competent level of nursing care using the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Professional performance standards encompass ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN must possess the clinical knowledge and skills required for specific clinical areas. All nurses new to critical care will participate in a comprehensive 12-week Transition to Practice program, which includes classroom teaching, hands-on training, professional development, mentorship, simulations, case studies, and problem-based learning covering essential critical care topics.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
  • Virginia RN License Virginia or Compact/Multi-State Eligible.
  • All Direct Care RN's required to have BLS within 90 days of hire and ACLS within 1 year of hire.
  • 1 year of RN Experience required
  • 1 year of Intermediate - Stepdown level of care with cardiac knowledge ideal, ED, PCU or 1+ years of Medical/Surgical experience.

  • Bachelor of Science Nursing- BSN or MSN (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process.
  • Utilize the standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation).
  • Adhere to the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health).
  • Possess clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.
  • Participate in the 12-week Transition to Practice program for nurses new to critical care, which includes classroom teaching, hands-on training, professional development, and mentorship.
  • Engage in simulations, case studies, and problem-based learning covering critical care patient assessment and documentation, respiratory and cardiac care, vasoactive medications, hemodynamics and invasive monitoring, neurological care, post-operative and procedural care, GI/renal systems, ACLS mega code, sedation, analgesia, neuromuscular blockade, and effective communication with providers and families.
