The Registered Nurse delivers patient care through the framework of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome) in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the surgical patient. This role requires current, comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in conformance with recognized nursing standards and department policies, including the Patient Bill of Rights, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse will assess physiological and psychosocial health status, pain, and patient history, and will verbally report pertinent information to appropriate staff for continuity of care. Documentation in the patient record must be legible and signed with the appropriate professional title. The role involves assessing patient/family understanding and expectations, identifying desired patient outcomes, establishing nursing diagnoses and mutually acceptable patient/family goals, and formulating and implementing nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs. The nurse must demonstrate the ability to assess and problem-solve, respond to emergencies, and practice within legal and ethical guidelines. Specific skills include demonstrating proper preoperative process (communication/report), surgical case counting, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, and surgical site identification and marking. The nurse will also anticipate surgeon's needs during surgical procedures and participate in a Professional Nursing Organization.
