About The Position

This is a supplemental staffing position to ensure continuous high-quality patient care through the effective use of per diem labor. The role defines the requirements, responsibilities, and expectations of per diem Nursing employees. The Registered Nurse acts as a patient advocate in the application of the nursing process, considering the age-specific needs of patients. This position is for non-union facilities in MA and RI, requiring a minimum of two years of full-time experience. Per-diem employees cover staffing gaps but are not guaranteed hours. The role involves working weekend shifts, which offer a differential premium, and requires a monthly commitment of 24 worked hours (including 12 night hours and 12 weekend hours, if available) and commitment to specific holidays (one winter holiday and one other holiday). Per diem scheduling obligations must be met on the employee's home unit before working in other units. Failure to meet requirements may result in corrective action. Shifts canceled by the hospital count towards commitments. The pay rate is $60.00 per hour for RNs, eligible for shift differentials. Benefits include eligibility for Jury Duty Pay and Bereavement Pay, but not for Earned Time Accrual, Health/Dental Insurance, Life/Disability Insurance. Retirement Program eligibility is per BUH policy. The position must meet Brown University Health RN job requirements. The Health System reserves the right to discontinue the per diem program.

Requirements

  • Licensure as Registered Nurse in applicable state(s) or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
  • Graduate of a school of nursing, Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in applicable state(s).
  • Conformity to the Code of Professional Nurses.
  • Understanding of the provisions of the Nurse Practice Act of the state of Rhode Island.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and sensitivity to cultural diversity in each step of the care process.
  • Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation upon hire (American Heart Association BLS).
  • Minimum of two-year, full-time experience.
  • Must meet Brown University Health RN job requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred.
  • For specialty units, general nursing experience, appropriate to the specialty, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Recognizes and reports deviations from patient or established norms, including those not related to chief patient complaints.
  • Reports patient's responses to treatment(s) and documents nursing interventions.
  • Provides basic comfort and support according to patient needs, fostering patient and family participation in achieving optimum functioning.
  • Sets priorities in individual patient assignments and seeks guidance when necessary.
  • Identifies and assesses emergency situations, initiates appropriate response and intervention, and plans for potential needs.
  • Defines nursing diagnosis and expected patient outcomes, modifying the nursing plan of care as needed and documenting assessments.
  • Implements nursing interventions and evaluates based on patient outcomes, modifying the plan of care accordingly.
  • Maintains knowledge of contemporary, professional nursing practice within the legal framework of the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act and attends training to stay current.
  • Utilizes established protocols and collaborates with the health team to facilitate therapeutic interventions.
  • Participates in quality improvement processes and risk management activities, attending unit or hospital meetings.
  • Functions in a cooperative and productive manner in the work environment.
  • Integrates complete physical assessment with nursing assessment and records reviews to develop a comprehensive plan of care.
  • Follows all documentation guidelines per policy and procedure.
  • Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Demonstrates self-direction in maintaining and advancing clinical and professional competency.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
  • Provides functional guidance and direction to LPNs, CNAs, and other licensed personnel as required.
  • May assume shift charge responsibility on an assigned unit, maintaining an overview of unit activities and delegating work responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.
