About The Position

The School Nurse promotes the health, safety, and well-being of students by providing nursing oversight, coordinating health services, supporting emergency preparedness, and ensuring compliance with state health requirements. The nurse works with families, staff, healthcare providers, and community agencies to create a safe and healthy learning environment for all students.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan.
  • Current CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain.
  • Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting multiple school buildings.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and oversee individualized health care plans for students with chronic medical conditions, including coordinating with families, physicians, and school staff.
  • Monitor district-wide implementation of student medical plans and ensure rescue medications and emergency medical supplies are available and maintained.
  • Provide consultation regarding student health needs for Section 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Coordinate school health emergency preparedness, including AED maintenance, emergency medical kits, bleeding control kits, epinephrine, naloxone, and other emergency response resources.
  • Plan and deliver annual health-related training for staff, including medication administration, diabetes care, seizure response, asthma, allergies and anaphylaxis, CPR/AED, first aid, and other required medical procedures.
  • Provide periodic supervision of delegated tasks to unlicensed personnel, including medication administration, diabetes care, seizure care, etc.
  • Serve as the district resource for communicable disease prevention, reporting, and response in collaboration with the local health department.
  • Monitor student immunization compliance using the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR) and ensure adherence to state requirements.
  • Maintain accurate medical records to ensure compliance with state and school mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions and the related archival responsibilities in MCIR, and reports to the local health department
  • Provide health consultation to students, families, and staff regarding illness prevention, wellness, and student health concerns.
  • Support the building medical emergency response team (MERT) with medical and cardiac emergency responses and early review.
