About The Position

This position is currently approved for a temporary enhanced hourly rate due to critical staffing needs at designated facilities. The enhanced rate will remain in effect only while the facility is experiencing critical staffing shortages. This is a flexible staffing arrangement for Registered Nurses seeking additional hours, no more than 29 hours per week. The position is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-RN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.
  • Standard of care is achieved through a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
  • Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality and interfacing with other departments on an as-needed basis.
  • Registered Nurses possess the ability to delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
  • Registered Nurses are capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • To provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
