The Registered Nurse coordinates and delivers high-quality, patient-centered care consistent with department requirements and the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. Working with medical providers and other care-team members, the RN provides individualized, comprehensive, compassionate care using established nursing models such as “Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage.” The RN advocates for patients, families, and caregivers and supports the organization’s mission, values, patient experience, clinical outcomes, and departmental performance. The RN performs ordered procedures and monitoring, documents care in the patient medical record, and teaches patients and caregivers about medical conditions, status, treatment plans, medications and potential side effects, and follow-up measures. The RN explains complex medical terminology in understandable terms; provides education about non-medicinal measures such as diet, exercise, disease prevention, and lifestyle changes; and prepares patients and caregivers for future self-management. The role also supports evidence-based practice and continuous improvement, and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate, evaluate, customize, and deliver holistic treatment that promotes recovery.
