About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the General Surgery Clinic provides patient care in a supportive, quality-focused nursing environment at UP Health System - Portage. The role includes implementing care plans, documenting care, monitoring and communicating patient conditions, coordinating care, educating patients and families, advocating for patients, delegating care activities, and obtaining prior authorizations. The schedule is Monday through Friday, with 8-hour day shifts, at 1.0 FTE or 80 hours per pay period.

Requirements

• Current Michigan RN license, or ability to attain one within 90 days of hire.
• Associate degree from an accredited nursing school.
• Basic Life Support certification, required and available upon hire.
• Annual influenza vaccination or declination is required.

• Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs plan-of-care interventions, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, and other medical care treatments.
• Documents patient care provided.
• Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to the care team, physician, nursing home, patient, and family.
• Collaborates across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfers, discharge, referrals, and spiritual or psychosocial support needs.
• Evaluates patient and family learning needs and provides education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
• Advocates for the patient's physical and emotional well-being.
• Delegates patient care activities to appropriately qualified staff.
• Performs prior authorizations for tests, procedures, medications, and other items required by the patient's insurance.
• Performs other job duties as assigned.
