The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department practices independently in the same or a similar clinical setting and demonstrates awareness of relevant aspects of each situation. The nurse provides routine and complex care, works toward long-range goals or plans, continues to develop the ability to manage clinical contingencies, and makes appropriate assignments and delegates to other care providers as needed. Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the nurse uses the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate care for assigned patients. The role addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families in accordance with the nurse’s level of practice. The nurse administers medications and treatments using appropriate protocols, monitors for side effects and effectiveness, documents patient histories and care, assesses learning needs, provides education, and identifies issues and resources. Newly hired experienced RNs attend New Nurses Orientation within 30 days of hire and are precepted by a designated trained staff member. Onboarding includes organizational entry competency validation and Emergency Department-specific competency validation. Newly licensed RNs may participate in a residency program or other orientation. Competencies are completed with a preceptor at the bedside and documented through the program’s tracking software; annual competency verification is also required. Multiple shifts are available. A $20,000 sign-on opportunity is available.
