The Registered Nurse (RN) provides individualized nursing care to infusion patients using the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcomes and planning, implementation, and evaluation. In this specialized outpatient oncology role, the RN works with another RN to support four Oncologists/Hematologists and three Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioners. The RN manages a dedicated caseload of patients receiving oral chemotherapy and oncology medications at home, providing education, monitoring, adherence support, and early identification and management of treatment-related side effects. The position supports patients across the age continuum and involves collaborating with physicians and other interprofessional colleagues to plan, implement, and evaluate care. The RN must manage time effectively, prioritize patient and practice needs, and occasionally respond to emergent patient-care situations requiring critical thinking and prompt assessment. The role offers opportunities to develop oral chemotherapy and immunotherapy expertise, attain nationally recognized chemotherapy/immunotherapy competency, and pursue Oncology Nurse Certification (OCN®) through the Oncology Nursing Society.
