Requirements

  • Current license as a Registered Nurse with the BCCNM.
  • Criminal record check performed by the BCCNM.
  • Education in the field of palliation and/or an interest in gaining knowledge in the field of study.
  • Education in other areas of nursing that support their candidacy for palliative care.
  • Ability to read and understand written reports (including charts and Point Click Care).
  • Strong assessment skills.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately complete medication calculations.
  • Proficiency in computer use.
  • Understanding of environmental and chemical measures used for individualized treatment of discomfort.
  • Ability to support and work with all team members through attentive listening and effective, respectful communication.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for the delivery of care for each resident, ensuring that all personal and nursing care is provided in accordance with the mission of The Salvation Army, agency, regulatory and established ethical guidelines and requirements.
  • Monitors the treatment regime and health status including physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to assess the resident’s situation, to detect subtle or significant changes in symptoms, in comfort and know when action is necessary.
  • Performs nursing care to residents including administering prescribed medication and treatments, and observing, recording and reporting symptoms and changes in resident conditions; offers compassionate care by remaining open to the goals and values of residents.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with all members of the hospice team, with residents and their family members, and can effectively and patiently collaborate toward arriving at the best practice and best care of residents.
  • Carries out established procedures to offer care for residents, is aware of the upkeep of the facility’s equipment (such as fridge temperatures, battery operated devices, emergency equipment, and oxygen concentrators) and uses supplies properly.
  • Provides caring environment for residents and families including facilitating participation of residents and family in care plans.
  • Maintains pertinent records and ensures all documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of information regarding residents and families.
  • Documents in electronic health record (Point Click Care) and in the E-MAR all medication reconciliations.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities such as in services to maintain current knowledge and practice.
  • Maintains relationships with all external health agencies, professionals and the community.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
