At Stony Brook Medicine, Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems using nursing methods and techniques, including case finding, health teaching, and counseling. They provide care that supports patients’ health and well-being while adhering to a medical regimen. Emergency Nurses care for patients experiencing trauma or injury, quickly recognize life-threatening problems, and are trained to respond immediately. The Registered Nurse assesses patients’ conditions and nursing needs, coordinates nursing care with other health disciplines, and develops individualized care plans that include teaching needs and discharge planning. The nurse administers direct care and medications, practices infection control, maintains a clean and safe environment, and remains accountable for care delivered to assigned patients. The role also includes communicating changes in patient condition, documenting patient and family education, working effectively with staff and departments, and participating in quality assurance activities or committees. Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids, tissue, accidents, injuries, and illness. The role may require responding to unpredictable emergency and crisis situations and may occasionally involve irregular hours and pressure from multiple calls and inquiries. The position is classified by OSHA as Category 1. It may require respiratory protection, which may prohibit facial hair, and may be designated essential during institutional emergencies. Hospital positions may be subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary.
