The Registered Nurse is a professional caregiver and member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients during a designated time frame. The nurse supervises and provides patient care using the nursing process, including the therapeutic use of self. The Trauma/Surgical ICU (TSICU) is a 28-bed critical care unit for traumatically injured patients and patients undergoing complex surgeries who require close monitoring and care. Patients are admitted from the emergency department, the Ross Trauma Admitting Area, or the operating room. The unit cares for patients with traumatic brain, spinal cord, rib, lung, and orthopedic injuries, including poly-trauma affecting multiple body systems. Common surgical cases include Whipple procedures, esophagectomies, gastrostomies, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The TSICU team includes registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners, resident physicians, and attending trauma surgeons. Staff collaborate with respiratory therapists and specialty surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians receive education specific to trauma patient care.
