About The Position

This is a part-time Registered Nurse position at Haynesville Correctional Center, offering flexible staffing for nurses seeking additional hours, with an average of no more than 29 hours per week. The role involves providing nursing care within adult correctional institutions using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating). Services include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life support/emergency care. Responsibilities include documenting patient information, maintaining confidentiality, interfacing with other departments, delegating tasks, and working assigned hours, days, and locations. Nurses must be available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional demands and promote evidence-based nursing care through education and certification, with a focus on correctional nursing. Additional duties or location assignments may be necessary to meet clinical and administrative needs. This is a wage position limited to 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, with the wage employment period resetting annually. Wage employees are limited to an average of 29 hours per week and do not receive state benefits. The position is located at Haynesville Correctional Center in Richmond County, Virginia.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain valid unrestricted Virginia RN license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not yet licensed, NCLEX-RN Exam must be scheduled at time of application).
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.
  • Utilize a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
  • Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality.
  • Interface with other departments on an as-needed basis.
  • Delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
  • Provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • Provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
