The Registered Nurse integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. The role supports the health care team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. Depending on clinical level, the nurse provides direction and education, develops or demonstrates leadership skills, and delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care according to medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The nurse safely administers prescribed medications and identifies incompatibilities or interactions. Clinical Nurse I applies technical skills and theoretical knowledge to patient care and begins to acquire unit-level leadership skills. Clinical Nurse II demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, begins applying knowledge to a specific patient population, recognizes patient changes and intervenes, mobilizes resources for individualized patient and family needs, and assumes unit-level leadership responsibilities. Clinical Nurse III demonstrates unit-level clinical knowledge, anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes, and serves as a clinical role model. Nurses follow provider orders, Virginia nursing regulations, the ANA Code of Ethics, national nursing practice standards, and VCUHS policies and procedures. They organize work and delegate and supervise others, including registered nurses, LPNs, care partners, and unit secretaries. The role serves age groups as appropriate to the unit assignment.
