About The Position

This is a PRN (as needed) Registered Nurse position at State Farm Correctional Center. The role involves providing nursing care within adult institutions using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating. Services include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life support/emergency care. The nurse will document pertinent information in the health record, practice confidentiality, and interface with other departments. Registered Nurses are expected to delegate tasks, work assigned hours, days, and locations, and provide coverage as needed to meet institutional demands. The position also focuses on providing evidence-based nursing care and promoting continued competence through education and certification, with an emphasis on correctional nursing. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet clinical and administrative needs. This is a wage position limited to 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, with a maximum of 29 hours per week on average. This position offers no state benefits but is currently approved for a temporary enhanced hourly rate due to critical staffing needs.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain valid unrestricted Virginia RN license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not yet licensed, NCLEX-RN Exam must be scheduled at time of application)
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American. Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.
  • Utilize a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
  • Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality.
  • Interface with other departments on an as-needed basis.
  • Delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
  • Provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • Provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
