About The Position

The Ambulatory Urology Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to adult patients in an outpatient urology clinic. The RN is responsible for coordinating patient care, performing nursing assessments, assisting with office-based procedures, providing patient education, triaging patient concerns, and independently performing urodynamic studies (UDS) in collaboration with urology providers. The RN promotes high-quality, patient-centered care while ensuring patient safety, efficient clinic flow, and adherence to regulatory and professional standards. Requirements

  • Nursing degree: Diploma, ASN or BSN (preferred), Ability to obtain BSN within 4 years
  • Licensed to practice professional nursing as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Requires current basic life support (BLS) certification
  • 3-5 years experience in Ambulatory Urology, required
  • Must be proficient and have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enters, and interprets computerized data/information.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with various members of the health care team, patients, and families.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Relevant clinical experience in pulmonary or allergy, preferred.
  • Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement research utilization projects.
  • Ability to effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the patient populations served.
  • Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
  • Ability to effectively manage stress due to critical issues related to patient care, changing organizational climate and personnel issues.
  • Ability to effectively work as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with providing patient care: records vital signs; discusses and documents chief health concerns.
  • Performs and record specialized testing including, but not limited to: urodynamics, voiding trials, PSA check.
  • Prepares and safely administers medications, including but not limited to immunizations, flu shots, and other injections.
  • Performs nursing type duties specific to the department. For example, may apply dressings, perform ear irrigations and other wound care as directed.
  • Coordinates patient prescriptions. Makes phone calls to pharmacies.
  • Acts as a liaison between nursing agencies, VNA and other health agencies.
  • Uses computer to schedule appointments necessary for follow up appointments or other ancillary appointments, as appropriate.
  • Responds to telephone and EMR requests.
  • Acts as a liaison to facilitate coordination of patient referrals and forms to other specialties
  • Ability to cope with high-pressure situations and demonstrate independent thinking and decision making as well as a high level of diplomacy.
  • Deals discreetly with sensitive information, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Obtains and enters patient information and procedure data into Epic medical record system.
  • Responds to patient phone inquiries regarding office appointments, dates for specialty appointments, and other referred services such as radiology, surgery, etc.
  • Monitors patient flow and patient satisfaction. Prospectively identify potential issues.
  • Trouble-shoot issues and work with Team Coordinator, practice administrator and Physicians to ensure efficiency.
  • Coordinates the patient flow and schedules for the supported Physicians and other Providers to ensure accurate and efficient daily operation.
  • Attends scheduled training sessions for systems upgrades or newly acquired clinical systems and all trainings as required.
  • Answers telephone calls in a courteous manner, maintains department files, and responds to inquiries from personnel, patients and physicians.
  • Organizes work area for efficiency, neatness and safety.
  • Communicates with all members of staff on work related issues effectively and courteously.
  • Assures that all messages for physicians and designees are accurate and forwarded promptly to the physician and/or designee.
  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care can be provided.
  • Utilizes hospital’s Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures
  • Maintain proper dress code.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
  • Independently perform urodynamic studies (UDS), including complex and fluoroscopic urodynamics, according to provider orders and established protocols.
  • Obtain and document patient history relevant to bladder function and lower urinary tract symptoms.
  • Insert urethral and rectal catheters using sterile technique.
  • Monitor patients throughout testing and recognize abnormal findings or patient intolerance.
  • Accurately document study findings and communicate results to the urologist.
  • Maintain competency with evolving urodynamic technology and best practices.
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and develop appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Provide pre- and post-procedure nursing care.
  • Administer medications, including intravesical therapies such as BCG and chemotherapy, IM injections, and other prescribed treatments.
  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during office-based procedures, including: Cystoscopy Prostate biopsy Vasectomy Catheter insertion and exchanges Suprapubic tube changes Bladder instillations
  • Monitor patients for complications and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Assess patient concerns through telephone and electronic messaging.
  • Prioritize symptoms and determine the appropriate level of care.
  • Provide nursing advice within scope of practice using evidence-based protocols.
  • Coordinate urgent evaluations, medication refills, laboratory testing, imaging, and provider follow-up.
  • Document all triage encounters accurately in the electronic medical record.
