About The Position

This role is ideal for Registered Nurses interested in the Emergency Department who have limited experience or are still completing required post-graduate coursework for specialty roles. The position offers an opportunity to consolidate skills by rotating through a specialty nursing unit(s) before and/or during the completion of post-graduate coursework. Successful applicants must participate in and complete the applicable post-graduate specialty nursing courses/program within agreed-to time frames. The role is located at Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) in New Westminster, B.C., a key facility in the ongoing Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Project. New Westminster offers scenic waterfront views and is centrally located within the Greater Vancouver region.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing.
  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of the applicable post graduate specialty nursing course/program and/or willingness to complete the applicable post graduate specialty nursing courses/program.
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and provide nursing care through appropriate interventions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, the public, medical staff, and the interprofessional care team.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care, demonstrating empathy, sensitivity to diverse cultures, and patient advocacy.
  • Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem-solve effectively.
  • Ability to teach and instruct patients and families.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to collaborate with and promote cooperation among members of the interprofessional care team.
  • Ability to use factual information, prior learning, and basic principles to support nursing decisions with evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including relevant computer applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patients and collects information from various sources, making nursing diagnoses and determining appropriate interventions.
  • Plans, performs, and evaluates nursing interventions and care.
  • Collaborates with patients, families/caregivers in developing care plans, fostering therapeutic relationships, and advocating for patient rights and autonomy.
  • Participates in care and discharge planning, ensuring timely updates and collaboration with the interprofessional care team.
  • Coordinates nursing care, sets priorities, delegates tasks to support staff, and makes referrals.
  • Collaborates with the interprofessional care team (Physicians, LPNs, PCC, CNEs, etc.) to resolve issues and adjust care plans.
  • Teaches patients and families about illness prevention, health restoration, and maintenance, assessing learning needs and providing instruction.
  • Plans and discusses referral information, initiating referrals to appropriate health care/community agencies.
  • Documents assessments, diagnoses, interventions, responses, outcomes, and referrals according to standards.
  • Participates in nursing committees, care conferences, and councils.
  • Participates in research and quality improvement activities, identifying patient care issues and recommending changes.
  • Participates in in-services and educational programs, identifying own learning goals and maintaining clinical competence.
  • Provides feedback to management regarding patient care programs, policies, and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
